DRDO Successfully Conducts Maiden Flight-Trial of Indigenous Stratospheric Airship Platform

Sheopur: Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the maiden flight-trial of a Stratospheric Airship Platform from its Sheopur trial site in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday.

Developed by the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra, the indigenous airship was launched with an instrumental payload and ascended to a stratospheric altitude of approximately 17 kilometers. The platform remained airborne for around 62 minutes, during which real-time data from onboard sensors was collected. This data will play a crucial role in developing high-fidelity simulation models for future long-duration missions at high altitudes.

Key onboard systems, including envelop pressure control and emergency deflation mechanisms, were deployed during the trial to assess their in-flight performance. The airship was successfully recovered post-trial for further technical evaluation.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the DRDO team for the milestone achievement. “This system will uniquely enhance India’s earth observation and Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, placing the country among a select few nations with such indigenous platforms,” he stated.

Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO, congratulated the scientific team behind the project. He described the successful prototype flight as a “critical milestone” toward realising lighter-than-air, high-altitude platforms capable of long-endurance operations in the stratosphere.

Stratospheric airships are increasingly being viewed globally as the next frontier in aerial surveillance and communication due to their quasi-stationary capabilities, low operational costs, and wide-area coverage.
