DRDO Successfully Conducts Flight-Tests of Advanced VSHORADS Missile System

Pokhran: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) achieved a significant milestone by successfully conducting three flight-tests of the 4th Generation, miniaturised Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) at the Pokhran Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan on October 3 and 4, 2024. The tests showcased the advanced capabilities of this indigenous air defence system, which was tested against high-speed aerial targets, demonstrating critical parameters such as maximum range and maximum altitude interception.

The trials validated the repeatability of the missile system’s hit-to-kill capability across various engagement scenarios, including approaching, receding, and crossing modes. These successful trials represent a major step forward for the development of VSHORADS and its readiness for user trials and production.

The VSHORADS missile system is a Man-Portable Air Defence System (MANPADS) developed indigenously by the DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and Development cum Production Partners (DcPPs). Notably, the missiles used in these trials were produced by two agencies under the DcPP mode, aligning with the government’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat,’ promoting self-reliance in defence production.

The involvement of the Indian Armed Forces has been integral to the development of the VSHORADS missile system, with the three services participating from the early stages of the project and supporting the developmental trials.

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the armed forces, and the industry partners for the successful development trials, stating that this new missile system equipped with modern technologies will significantly enhance the armed forces’ capabilities against aerial threats.

Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, also extended his congratulations to the DRDO team, industry partners, and the armed forces, commending their efforts in the successful flight-tests. The trials mark an important step towards bolstering India’s air defence systems and reinforcing national security.
