Chandipur: The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy successfully conducted a flight test of the Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha. The test, held at approximately 1500 hours, demonstrated the missile system’s ability to track and engage a high-speed aerial target flying at a low altitude.
The test was conducted using a land-based vertical launcher, validating several updated components of the VL-SRSAM system, including its Proximity Fuse and Seeker. The missile’s performance was carefully monitored through advanced instruments such as the Radar Electro-Optical Tracking System and telemetry systems deployed at ITR Chandipur. The successful interception of the target reaffirms the reliability of this state-of-the-art air defense system.
Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh praised the teams from DRDO and the Indian Navy, commending their efforts in achieving this significant milestone. “This successful test underscores the reliability and effectiveness of the VL-SRSAM weapon system, which will play a crucial role in bolstering India’s defense capabilities,” he said.
Dr. Samir V Kamat, Chairman of DRDO and Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development, also congratulated the teams, noting that the system will significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy. “The VL-SRSAM will serve as a force multiplier for our naval defense, providing a crucial layer of protection against aerial threats,” Dr. Kamat stated.
