DMK to Sit in Opposition as Stalin Accepts Verdict; TVK Emerges as Major Force in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Signalling a shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, outgoing Chief Minister M. K. Stalin on Monday acknowledged the Assembly election results and announced that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam would assume the role of a “responsible and constructive Opposition.”

In a public message, Stalin congratulated the winning candidates and said the party fully respects the people’s mandate. Reflecting on his tenure, he highlighted the government’s focus on welfare-driven governance and inclusive development, stating that the DMK had sought support based on its performance and commitment to continue pro-people initiatives.

He reiterated that his administration worked for all citizens irrespective of political affiliation and thanked voters, party cadres, and alliance partners for their continued support. Stressing continuity in ideology, Stalin said electoral outcomes are part of democratic processes and the party would move forward with renewed determination.

The results, however, marked a significant political development with actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay leading the rise of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, which made a strong electoral debut and emerged as the single largest party.

As per data from the Election Commission of India, TVK secured 82 seats and was leading in 25 constituencies. The DMK won 44 seats and led in 16, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam secured 34 seats and was ahead in 13.

In a notable upset, Stalin lost the Kolathur constituency to TVK’s V.S. Babu by 8,795 votes, ending his long-standing dominance in the seat.

Despite the setback, the DMK retained pockets of influence, winning seats in regions such as Gudalur, Coonoor, and Valparai. Among alliance partners, Congress and CPI candidates also registered victories in select constituencies.

The elections for the 234-member Assembly were conducted in a single phase on April 23, recording a high voter turnout of 85.1 per cent, reflecting strong public participation in the democratic process.
