Dhudrukusum, a village near Hirakud wetland earns Green Village tag

Debrigarh: Dhudrukusum, a village near Hirakud Wetland bordering Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary has set an example by earning a Green Village tag. A village of around 48 families has taken a step to reduce forest dependency to conserve wildlife.

The villagers have said complete ‘NO’ to open defecation or use of the forest for the same.

Hirakud Wildlife Division has constructed toilets in all 48 households of this village. Earthen reusable dustbins have also been provided to all households for not using forest or banks of Hirakud wetland for the dumping of daily wastes. To motivate villagers to adapt to the change, women in every household have been trained.

The descent lifestyle has made the village backyard clean and plastic free and with this change, Sambar, Indian Gaur, deer, and peacocks among others could be seen grazing in the periphery of Dhudrukusum.

The villagers have also adopted wildlife and have promised to make the whole landscape an example of conservation. Solar streetlights have also been provided in the village to reduce man-animal conflicts and depredation. The apart fuel efficient challahs have been provided to all households which will help in reducing the use of firewood and collection of wood from Debrigarh Sanctuary.

Women SHGs and village Eco-development committee will maintain this under the guidance of Hirakud Wildlife Division.

“This initiative will strengthen the bonding of locals for Debrigarh and wild animals. It will reduce pressure on wildlife habitats and will create a cleaner space for grazing and movement of wild animals. It will also help in inculcating eco-friendly habits among neighbouring villages.” shared the Hirakud Wildlife official.
