Dholavira Village with Ruins of Harappa Civilisation In Gujarat Gets UNESCO World Heritage Site Tag

Dholavira village in Kutch district of Gujarat with ruins of Harappa civilisation has been inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on Tuesday.

Dholavira is the most important archaeological site discovered in 1967-68 by JP Joshi. The site has been under excavation by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) since 1990 and each time revealing new things about the civilisation. It is one of the five largest cities of the Indus Valley Civilization and is located about 250 km from Bhuj. 

As per Government of India’s Ministry of Culture, the nomination of Dholavira for the World Heritage Site tag was submitted in 2019-2020.

UNESCO shared the news on their social media.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared his happiness about the recognition to Dholavira. He tweeted, “Absolutely delighted by this news. Dholavira was an important urban centre and is one of our most important linkages with our past. It is a must visit, especially for those interested in history, culture and archaeology.”
