Deep Depression in BoB Formed, Likely to Intensify into Cyclonic Storm by Oct 23

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning regarding a deep depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 23, 2024.

According to the latest bulletin, the depression has been moving west-northwestward at a speed of 7 kmph over the past six hours and has intensified into a deep depression, located approximately 690 km southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 740 km south-southeast of Sagar Island (West Bengal), and 710 km south-southeast of Khepupara (Bangladesh).

The IMD indicates that the system is likely to continue its west-northwestward trajectory and will become a cyclonic storm by the evening of October 23. Following this, it is expected to further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm as it moves northwestward, reaching the northwest Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 24.

The weather agency has predicted that the storm will cross the coasts of north Odisha and West Bengal between Puri and Sagar Island during the night of October 24 into the morning of October 25. Wind speeds are expected to reach between 100-110 kmph, with gusts of up to 120 kmph, raising concerns for coastal communities.

Authorities are urging residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant and prepare for possible heavy rainfall, strong winds, and associated hazards as the situation develops. The IMD will continue to monitor the system closely and provide updates on its progress.
