Cyclone Hamoon brewing over Bay of Bengal

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cautionary advisory as a depression in the westcentral Bay of Bengal intensifies into deep depression. Initially identified as a well-marked low-pressure area over the Southeast and adjoining Central Bay of Bengal, the system has now concentrated into a depression.

“The depression, currently positioned near latitude 16.2°N  and longitude 86.4°E, is approximately 450 km south of Paradip (Odisha),” informed Director General of IMD, Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.

According to the latest forecasts, the deep depression is likely to further intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next 24 hours. IMD anticipates a northwestward movement over the following 12 hours, followed by a recurve and a subsequent north-northeastward trajectory over the next three days, directing it towards the coasts of Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal.

The residents and authorities in these regions are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

Mohapatra, has emphasized that the weather system is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall along the coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal between October 23 and 25. Additionally, rough sea conditions are expected during this period, prompting the need for caution and preparedness in the face of the approaching weather disturbance.

If the system turns into cyclonic storm, it will be named ‘Hamoon’ suggested by Iran.
