Cuttack’s Unique Silver Filigree Granted Geographical Indication (GI) Tag

Bhubaneswar: Cuttack’s renowned Rupa Tarakasi, or silver filigree, a distinctive craft exclusive to Odisha, has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the Geographical Indication Registry in Chennai. This accolade brings the total number of products with GI tags in Odisha to 26.

The Odisha State Cooperative Handicrafts Corporation Ltd (UTKALIKA) took the initiative to secure the GI tag for Cuttack’s silver filigree, filing the application on July 1, 2021. The application highlighted the craft’s historical roots, tracing its origins back to the 13th century in the region.

‘Tarakasi,’ also known as ‘Silver Filigree,’ is an exquisite silver craft where silver bricks are skillfully transformed into thin, fine wires or foils. These wires are then used to create intricate jewelry, including pieces worn by Odissi dancers, as well as decorative artifacts for accessories, home décor, and religious and cultural purposes.

The artistry of silver filigree goes beyond jewelry, with artisans crafting models of iconic landmarks such as the Jagannath Temple, Konark Temple, and Mukteshwar Arch. These miniature creations serve as visual representations of Odisha’s rich art and heritage and are exhibited internationally.

During the festive season of Durga Puja, Cuttack’s skilled artisans showcase their expertise by creating medhas (tableaus) adorned with intricate filigree work and jewelry dedicated to the Goddess.

This recognition follows the recent addition of seven products from Odisha to the GI list in January, including Odisha Khajuri Guda, Dhenkanal Magji, Similipal Kai Chutney, Nayagarh Kanteimundi Brinjal, Kapadaganda: Dungaria Kondh Embroidery Shawl, Koraput Kalajeera Rice, and Painting of Lanjia Saura (Idital). The GI tag emphasizes the unique and authentic nature of these products, promoting and preserving their cultural and traditional significance.
