Cuttack’s Bali Jatra Granted National Status by Ministry of Culture

Bhubaneswar In a landmark decision, the Ministry of Culture has granted ‘national status’ to Cuttack’s historic Bali Jatra, one of Odisha’s most celebrated trade fairs. The announcement was made today by Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in the Rajya Sabha, with the Ministry also issuing an official notification confirming the designation.

The move fulfills a promise made earlier by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had assured national recognition for Odisha’s largest trade fair. The decision is expected to enhance the visibility of Bali Jatra on a national platform, promote Odisha’s rich maritime history, and boost tourism and cultural exchange.

PM Modi has repeatedly emphasized the significance of Bali Jatra, mentioning it in Mann Ki Baat, the National Trade Fair, and even during his 2023 visit to Indonesia. His recognition of the festival underscores its deep historical connection with India’s ancient maritime trade routes, particularly with Southeast Asia.

Efforts are also underway to secure UNESCO recognition for Bali Jatra. A special administrative committee has been formed to spearhead the campaign, with Cuttack Collector Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde confirming that steps will be taken to promote the festival across national and international platforms.

Last year, the festival saw unprecedented global participation, with ambassadors and representatives from 14 countries attending the inaugural ceremony. The fair, which commemorates Odisha’s ancient trade links with Southeast Asia, attracts lakhs of visitors every year, offering a mix of cultural performances, traditional crafts, food stalls, and trade exhibitions.
