CSIR-NIScPR Hosts Workshop to Empower Women in STEM on International Day of Women and Girls in Science

New Delhi: Marking the first decadal anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research – National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NIScPR) organized a one-day workshop in New Delhi. Themed “Empowering Girls for Participation in STEM: Fostering Awareness for Inclusive Education,” the event aimed to inspire young women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Held at CSIR-NIScPR, the workshop aligned with UNESCO’s global theme, “Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science,” and brought together 56 undergraduate students from prominent women’s colleges of the University of Delhi—Gargi College, Kalindi College, Lady Irwin College, Deshbandhu College, and Miranda House. Attended by academicians, researchers, and policymakers, the event served as a platform for mentorship, awareness, and guidance on government initiatives, scholarships, and funding opportunities available for women in STEM.

In her welcome address, Prof. Ranjana Aggarwal, Director, CSIR-NIScPR, stressed the importance of gender equality in STEM and the need to create a conducive environment for women in scientific careers. She highlighted the barriers women face when transitioning from academia to professional roles and emphasized the significance of breaking stereotypes. Dr. Geetha Vani Rayasam, Head, CSIR-Human Resource Development Group, elaborated on CSIR’s various initiatives supporting women in science.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Mini Thomas, Dean, Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Jamia Millia Islamia, and Former Director, NIT Trichy, who encouraged young women to challenge societal norms and actively pursue STEM careers. She urged institutions to create more opportunities for women scientists and professionals.

The second session featured Dr. Monika Kulshrestha, Chief Scientist, CSIR-National Physical Laboratory, who emphasized the importance of maintaining good health while striving for professional excellence. Dr. Ambika Behl, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-Central Road Research Institute, delivered a lecture titled “Highway Engineering Field: A Man’s World,” sharing her journey from research to fieldwork and highlighting the challenges of working in a male-dominated domain. She encouraged women to step out of their comfort zones and navigate professional challenges with confidence.

The event also included a special talk by Dr. Kanika Malik, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-NIScPR, who spoke about the Indian Women Scientists’ Association (IWSA) and its role in supporting women in science. An interactive group discussion allowed students to share their aspirations and challenges in STEM education. Sandhya Wakdikar, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-NIScPR, provided valuable insights on government schemes, funding opportunities, and career resources available to women in STEM.

The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks by Wakdikar, followed by the National Anthem. CSIR-NIScPR reaffirmed its commitment to bridging the gender gap in STEM and fostering an inclusive scientific community. The initiative marks a significant step toward empowering young women, ensuring they receive the necessary support to excel in STEM careers.
