CSIR-NIO Launches Certificate Course in Oceanography for Colombo Security Conclave Nations

New Delhi: In a significant stride towards bolstering collaboration and capacity building in the realm of Oceanography, the CSIR – National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) has inaugurated a month-long certificate course for member countries of the Colombo Security Conclave (CSC). The inaugural session of this groundbreaking initiative commenced on January 15, 2024.

This educational initiative stems directly from the inaugural CSC Oceanographers and Hydrographers conference held in Goa and Hyderabad in November 2022. Following the conference, scientists from CSC nations collaboratively conducted two expeditions in the Indian Ocean Region from June to September 2023. A subsequent joint expedition in the Antarctic, launched in December 2023, is currently in progress.

During the inaugural address, Prof. Sunil Kumar Singh, Director of CSIR-NIO, underscored the pivotal role of littoral nations in unraveling the complexities of the Indian Ocean Region. The month-long certificate course is coordinated by Dr Manguesh Uttam Gauns, Senior Principal Scientist & Head of the Biological Oceanography Division at CSIR-NIO.

Participants in the course will delve into various facets of Oceanography, focusing on the profound impacts of climate change on the Indian Ocean and global waters. The program encompasses interactive discussions, the exchange of best practices, and hands-on project work to augment practical knowledge.

The course is poised to facilitate a robust exchange of ideas, contributing to the expanding body of knowledge in Oceanography. The engagement aims to strengthen the capabilities of participating nations in addressing environmental challenges, promoting sustainable practices, and fostering scientific cooperation. This collaborative educational endeavor reflects a shared commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and addressing pressing issues affecting oceanic environments.
