CSIR-CMERI Unveils Electric Tiller for Sustainable Farming

Durgapur: In a significant move towards sustainable agriculture, Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), unveiled the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute’s (CMERI) Electric Tiller on May 25, 2024. This innovative technology is designed to meet the needs of small to marginal farmers, who represent over 80% of India’s farming community.

The Electric Tiller is engineered to benefit farmers with land holdings of less than 2 hectares, offering a cost-effective solution for various agricultural tasks. This development aligns with India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions and fostering environmentally friendly farming practices.

Key features of the Electric Tiller include enhanced torque and field efficiency, significantly reduced hand-arm vibration, and zero exhaust emissions. It operates quietly, providing a more comfortable experience for the user. The tiller is expected to reduce operational costs by up to 85%, thanks to its user-friendly design that supports battery pack swapping and multiple charging options, including AC and Solar DC charging.

Versatility is another hallmark of the Electric Tiller, as it can be used with a wide range of standard agricultural attachments such as ridgers, ploughs, iron wheels, and cultivators. Additionally, it comes equipped with a 2-inch water pump and a trolley attachment capable of carrying up to 500 kg. The tiller’s electronic controls and ergonomic handling make it easy to navigate fields, reducing operator fatigue and enhancing productivity.
