Creative Minds of Tomorrow 2024: Empowering India’s Next Generation of Filmmakers

Goa: The 4th edition of the Creative Minds of Tomorrow (CMOT) was inaugurated today at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), reinforcing its status as a key platform for nurturing emerging talent in India’s media and entertainment industry. Launched under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, CMOT has grown significantly, drawing increased recognition nationwide.

In his inaugural address, Sanjay Jaju, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, highlighted CMOT’s remarkable expansion. This year’s program features 100 young talents selected from 13 filmmaking disciplines, up from last year’s 75 participants across 10 fields.

“This initiative provides young creators with an unparalleled opportunity to showcase their skills and collaborate across diverse crafts,” said Jaju. He also announced the upcoming World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES), set for February 2025, emphasizing its role in enhancing India’s global media presence. “The Create in India Challenge – Season 1 (CIC) will further expand international exposure for these participants,” he added.

Neerja Sekhar, Special Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, praised CMOT’s transformation into an aspirational platform over the past four years. “This year’s addition of 13 crafts reflects both the program’s growth and the enthusiasm among India’s youth for creative careers. CMOT is not only nurturing talent but also driving economic growth and innovation in the creative industry,” she said.

Former Secretary Apurva Chandra underlined the importance of the 48-hour filmmaking challenge, a core element of CMOT. He noted, “This challenge tests creativity and teamwork. Success in this industry lies not just in talent but in the marketability of ideas.”

Mahima Kaul, Director of Public Policy at Netflix, announced the streaming giant’s collaboration with CMOT through the Voicebox initiative, training voice-over artists across India. “Over 50% of participants are women, reflecting our commitment to empowering diverse voices,” Kaul said. She also revealed that top CMOT performers will contribute to Azaadi Ki Amrit Kahaniyan, a Netflix project showcasing stories from India’s independence movement.

Renowned lyricist and CBFC Chairman Prasoon Joshi emphasized the importance of democratizing the creative process. “India’s diversity is its strength. CMOT bridges the gap by giving creators from all corners of the country a platform to shine,” he remarked.

Carter Pilcher, Founder and CEO of Shorts International, spoke about the promising future of Indian cinema. “CMOT participants, selected from thousands of applicants, will now collaborate, innovate, and create incredible films within 48 hours. This showcases the immense potential of India’s youth,” he said.

In a special ceremony, five CMOT alumni from previous editions were felicitated for their contributions to the industry. These champions will mentor the current batch of participants, sharing insights to guide them during the 48-hour challenge.

The Creative Minds of Tomorrow initiative continues to inspire young filmmakers, providing them with opportunities to excel in an evolving industry. As CMOT grows in scope and ambition, it solidifies India’s position as a global leader in media and entertainment.
