CP Radhakrishnan Elected India’s Vice-President

New Delhi: Senior BJP leader and Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan has been elected as the Vice-President of India, winning a clear mandate in the parliamentary electoral college. His election comes weeks after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post citing health concerns.

Radhakrishnan, the ruling alliance’s nominee, secured 452 votes out of 754 cast, defeating opposition-backed candidate and former Supreme Court judge Sudershan Reddy, who received 300. Fifteen votes were declared invalid.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Radhakrishnan on his victory, describing him as an “outstanding vice president” who would “strengthen constitutional values.” Home Minister Amit Shah also welcomed the result, dismissing opposition claims of internal rifts in the wake of Dhankhar’s resignation.

Dhankhar, who assumed office in August 2022, was expected to serve until 2027 but stepped down in July, citing the need to prioritise his health. While Congress leaders suggested political differences might have played a role, the BJP has strongly rejected such speculation.

At 68, Radhakrishnan brings a long political career to his new role. Born in Tamil Nadu, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in his youth before rising through BJP ranks. He served two terms in the Lok Sabha representing Coimbatore and later headed the party’s state unit. His reputation for affability and consensus-building is seen as an asset in his new constitutional position.

Before being sworn in, Radhakrishnan will step down as Governor of Maharashtra. As Vice-President, he will preside over the Rajya Sabha and hold the second-highest constitutional office in the country. If required, he will also act as President in the event of a vacancy.

Radhakrishnan’s tenure will run for a full five years.
