New Delhi: Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI), in collaboration with Tidal Wave Pvt Ltd, is demonstrating how 5G technology is revolutionizing the mining industry at the ongoing India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024, held at Pragati Maidan from October 15-18. The exhibition highlights 13 cutting-edge 5G-enabled use cases that showcase the transformative potential of the technology in enhancing safety, operational precision, and efficiency within mining operations.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the prestigious event, which is recognized as the largest digital technology platform in South Asia.
P.M. Prasad, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Coal India Limited, was the first to visit CMPDI’s stall at IMC 2024. He was accompanied by Manoj Kumar, CMD of CMPDI, along with other senior officials, who were present to discuss the future of mining technology and the pivotal role 5G is set to play in the industry.
CMPDI is presenting a total of 13 innovative 5G use cases at the congress, which include:
Each of these use cases demonstrates the unmatched capability of 5G technology in real-time communication, remote monitoring, and control within highly challenging mining environments. The technology offers seamless automation, reduces risks, and ensures future-ready operations by surpassing traditional wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi and Tetra.
CMPDI’s showcase reflects the broader industry shift towards digitalization, with 5G technology at the forefront. Its real-time communication abilities and extensive network coverage allow for increased safety measures and higher operational efficiency in mines. The showcased solutions, such as 5G-enabled drone operations and AI-powered video analytics, emphasize how mining companies can enhance their productivity while ensuring worker safety in hazardous conditions.
This year’s IMC builds upon the successes of IMC 2023, where the Ministry of Coal demonstrated several 5G-enabled solutions, including AI-powered cameras, vehicle tracking systems (VTS), and mission-critical voice and video communications in Northern Coalfields Limited’s Amlohri Open Cast Mine (OCP). CMPDI played a pivotal role in conceptualizing and deploying India’s first private 5G network in coal mining at Amlohri OCP, positioning the mining sector at the forefront of 5G innovation.
