CM Mohan Charan Majhi Inaugurates 19th Toshali National Crafts Mela, Pledges Support for Artisans

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the 19th edition of the Toshali National Crafts Mela at Janata Maidan, Bhubaneswar, highlighting the significance of handloom and handicrafts in preserving the state’s rich cultural heritage.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister emphasized that handloom is not just a craft but an integral part of Odia identity, providing livelihoods to thousands of artisans and instilling self-reliance. He reiterated his government’s commitment to the welfare of weavers and artisans, particularly the crucial role played by women in rural economies.

To further promote the sector, he announced that the state government has proposed an allocation of ₹52 crore for handicraft promotion and ₹122 crore for the textile and handloom industry in the financial year 2025-26. These measures, he said, will ensure sustainable growth and enhanced market access for artisans.

The fair, which runs until March 31, features over 650 stalls showcasing exquisite handicrafts and handloom products from more than 15 states across India. Odisha’s Minister for Cooperatives, Handlooms, Textiles, and Handicrafts, Pradeep Balasamat, underscored the unique charm of Odisha’s handicraft and textile traditions, stressing their role in women’s empowerment and economic security.

With a vision to integrate tourism with handicrafts, the government has outlined plans to develop heritage craft and weaving villages in Kantilo, Pipili, Hirakud, Cuttack, and Kotpad. The initiative aims to create sustainable livelihood opportunities while preserving traditional craftsmanship.
