Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday directed the police to take all necessary steps to ensure the public feels safe, reiterating the state government’s zero-tolerance policy on women’s safety. Chairing a high-level review meeting on Odisha’s crime and law and order situation at Lok Seva Bhawan, the CM instructed police officers to remain in “action mode” with regular senior-level monitoring.
Emphasising the need for greater security in educational hubs, Majhi asked the Home Department to strengthen police patrolling around schools and colleges to safeguard students. He also called for strict traffic regulation and coordinated action to curb brown sugar smuggling from neighbouring states.
The CM reviewed progress in tracing missing persons, noting that 8,035 women and 3,306 girls were rescued in the past year. He announced the formation of a special police recruitment board to fill vacancies in the department at the earliest.
According to data presented in the meeting, Odisha’s law and order situation remains under control, with most crime categories showing a decline over the past year—marking one of the most positive trends in the last 15 years. Majhi expressed satisfaction over the police’s performance in tackling illegal arms trade, sand smuggling, and executing non-bailable warrants.
However, he urged law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts against drug trafficking and illegal ganja cultivation, expanding operations to vulnerable areas.
The meeting was attended by CM’s advisor Prakash Mishra, Advocate General Pitambar Acharya, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Satyabrata Sahu, DGP Y.B. Khurania, CM’s Principal Secretary Saswat Mishra, and senior police officials.
