Central Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar Receives Z-category VIP Security

New Delhi: In response to a threat perception report prepared by central security agencies, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar has been provided with Z-category VIP security by the Central government, according to sources on Tuesday.

Rajiv Kumar, a distinguished former IAS officer from the 1984 batch, assumed the esteemed role of the 25th Chief Election Commissioner on May 15, 2022. Prior to this, he served as an election commissioner within the electoral commission, having been appointed on September 1, 2020.

The decision to enhance security for the CEC comes following recommendations from security agencies, indicating a heightened threat perception. Sources reveal that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has tasked the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) with deploying approximately 40-45 personnel to provide security cover for the Chief Election Commissioner.

With the general elections looming, scheduled to commence on April 19 and span seven phases, the timing of this security measure underscores the importance of ensuring the safety and security of key officials involved in the electoral process.

As part of the enhanced security arrangements, armed commandos will accompany Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar during his travels across the country, ensuring his safety and well-being amidst potential security threats.

The provision of Z-category VIP security to Rajiv Kumar reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding key personnel responsible for overseeing the electoral process, reinforcing the integrity and impartiality of India’s democratic institutions.

With the deployment of additional security personnel, the Chief Election Commissioner can carry out his duties effectively, maintaining the sanctity and fairness of the electoral process as the nation gears up for the upcoming general elections.
