Celebrating Linguistic Diversity: IGNCA Exhibition on International Mother Language Day

New Delhi: On the occasion of International Mother Language Day, the Kalanidhi Division and Academic Unit of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) present ‘Akshar | Shabd | Bhasha,’ an exhibition that pays tribute to the linguistic tapestry of India, celebrating the richness of languages, scripts, and words that form the foundation of our cultural heritage.

The exhibition, housed in the Darshanam I and II galleries and featuring an interactive wall in the corridors, brings to life the essence and significance of mother languages, showcasing their subtle yet vital role in the progressive development of society.

Darshanam II gallery hosts a curated collection of 22 quotes in the 22 scheduled languages of India, each highlighting something unique about the essence of the language. Meanwhile, Darshanam I, along with the corridor space, offers an immersive and interactive experience for visitors. The exhibition is open for public viewing until 29th February 2024.

Organized by the Academic Unit, IGNCA, for the Kalanidhi Division, IGNCA, ‘Akshar | Shabd | Bhasha’ underscores the importance of preserving mother languages, especially those facing the risk of extinction. The exhibition was inaugurated by Ms. Lily Pandeya, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in the presence of dignitaries such as Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary, IGNCA, Dr. Huma Masood, Senior Gender Specialist, UNESCO Regional Office, New Delhi, Ms. Priyanka Mishra, Director (Admin), IGNCA, and Prof Ramesh Gaur, Dean (Admin).

International Mother Language Day, celebrated on 21st February since its UNESCO announcement in 1999, aims to raise awareness about linguistic and cultural diversity, promoting multilingualism as an integral part of global heritage. ‘Akshar | Shabd | Bhasha’ stands as a meaningful contribution to this global initiative, fostering appreciation for India’s linguistic wealth.
