CBDT Enables Taxpayers to File Income Tax Returns for A.Y. 2024-25 from April 1

New Delhi: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced that taxpayers can now file their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2024-25, pertaining to the Financial Year 2023-24, starting from April 1, 2024. The ITR functionalities, including ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-4, and ITR-6, commonly used by taxpayers, are available on the e-filing portal for seamless filing.

CBDT had previously notified the ITR forms well in advance, with ITRs 1 and 4 being notified on December 22, 2023, followed by the notification of ITR-6 on January 24, 2024, and ITR-2 on January 31, 2024. This early notification ensured that taxpayers had sufficient time to familiarize themselves with the forms and prepare their returns.

Additionally, to facilitate e-Return Intermediaries (ERIs), the JSON Schema for ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-4, and ITR-6, along with the Schema of Tax Audit Reports, have been made available for A.Y. 2024-25. Taxpayers can access these schemas in the downloads section of the e-filing portal.

As of now, taxpayers have already filed approximately 23,000 ITRs for AY 2024-25, highlighting the readiness of taxpayers to fulfill their compliance obligations. The facility to file ITRs 3, 5, and 7 will be made available shortly to complete the suite of ITR forms for the upcoming assessment year.
