C-DOT and IIT Roorkee Join Forces to Develop 140GHz Fully Integrated Transmitter & Receiver Module for 6G and Beyond

New Delhi:  C-DOT (Centre for Development of Telematics), the leading Telecom R&D Centre of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India, has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT-R) to embark on a groundbreaking initiative. The collaboration aims to develop a cutting-edge 140GHz Fully Integrated Transmitter & Receiver Module, poised to redefine the landscape of 6G and beyond.

The agreement, signed under the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) scheme of the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India, signifies a commitment to advancing telecommunication products and solutions for affordable broadband and mobile services in rural and remote areas.

The primary objective of this collaboration is to create a 140GHz Fully Integrated Transmitter and Receiver Module that enables applications for 6G and beyond. The innovation lies in the generation, transmission, and antenna integration of Terahertz (THz) waves onto a single chip, resulting in reduced system size, weight, and power consumption. This breakthrough makes it well-suited for integration into portable devices such as smartphones, laptops, wearables, and more. The developed chip is expected to support data rates of up to several gigabits per second, facilitating high-speed data transfer within a chip or between chips.

The signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT, along with Prof. Sai Ramudu Meka, Associate Dean (Corporate Interaction), and Prof. Darshak Bhatt, Assistant Professor of IIT Roorkee. Directors of C-DOT, Dr. Pankaj Kumar Dalela and Ms. Shikha Srivastava, were also present during this significant agreement.

Representatives from IIT Roorkee expressed their full commitment to contributing to the development of next-generation communication technologies, aligning with the vision of “Viksit Bharat@2047” put forth by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They thanked C-DOT for this research collaboration, emphasizing its role in promoting cutting-edge research capabilities and infrastructure in the telecom sector.

Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT, highlighted the transformative potential of this technology developed on a single chip, emphasizing its impact on reducing system size, weight, and power consumption—a crucial aspect for the integration of 6G devices. He stressed the significance of indigenously designed and developed 6G technologies in achieving the overarching objective of the ‘Bharat 6G Mission.’

Both C-DOT and IIT-Roorkee emphasized that the successful completion of this collaborative project would contribute to the development of next-generation ultra-fast, low-latency 6G networks. This achievement is expected to drive a radical transformation across various industry sectors, showcasing India’s prowess in the realm of advanced telecommunication technologies.
