BMC to establish Biomethane Gas Plants to Tackle Garbage Crisis

Bhubaneswar: In response to the escalating garbage crisis, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to implement biomethane gas plants on the outskirts of the state capital for effective waste management.

Following approval from the Empowerment Committee of Infrastructure in January this year, the BMC has outlined plans to establish these plants at four locations, integrated with sewerage treatment plants (STPs).

For the proposed plants, the BMC has allocated 2 to 2.5 acres of land at STP centers located in Rokat, Meherpalli, Kochilaput, and Basuaghai.

It is anticipated that these plants, processing approximately 200 metric tonnes of waste daily, will yield four tonnes of gas per day.

The estimated expenditure for each plant’s establishment is approximately Rs 25.30 crore, with a cumulative investment of Rs 100 crore. The entire investment will be shouldered by the selected entity, with the BMC contributing by providing the necessary land.

These plants will exclusively process wet waste provided by the BMC. The generated biogas is earmarked for use in BMC vehicles, aimed at reducing fuel expenses while contributing to sustainable waste management practices.

The biogas initiative will be executed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. To identify a suitable partner, the BMC has initiated the tendering process.
