BIS Introduces New Safety Standards for Electric Vehicles and E-Rickshaws

New Delhi: In a significant move towards enhancing the safety and performance of electric vehicles (EVs) in India, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced two new standards: IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024. These standards are specifically designed to improve the safety of the powertrain—a critical component of EVs—in the L, M, and N categories, which include various types of motor vehicles.

The new standards focus on ensuring that the powertrain components meet stringent safety requirements, enhancing the overall reliability and safety of electric vehicles. Additionally, they place a strong emphasis on the performance and security of batteries, which are essential for the efficient and safe operation of EVs.

Recognizing the growing popularity of e-rickshaws and e-karts across the country, BIS has also introduced IS 18294: 2023. This new standard sets comprehensive safety guidelines for these vehicles, covering various aspects from construction to functionality. These standards are aimed at ensuring the safety of both drivers and passengers, addressing the unique requirements of e-rickshaws and e-karts.

With the introduction of these new standards, BIS now oversees a total of 30 Indian Standards dedicated to electric vehicles and their accessories, including charging systems. This comprehensive framework of standards underscores the commitment to advancing electric mobility in India.
