Biju Patnaik to Be Honoured by Russian Embassy on 80th Victory Day Celebration

Bhubaneswar: In a rare international tribute, the Russian Embassy in New Delhi will honour legendary freedom fighter and former Odisha Chief Minister Biju Patnaik for his heroic contributions during World War II. The felicitation will be part of the 80th Victory Day celebration on May 9, which commemorates the Soviet Union’s historic triumph over Nazi Germany.

In recognition of his role in supporting the Allied forces, the Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, has invited Biju Janata Dal president and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to attend the solemn ceremony. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar is expected to be the chief guest at the commemorative event in New Delhi.

Victory Day holds deep significance for Russia and its allies, remembering the sacrifices made during the most brutal conflict in human history. In his invitation letter, Ambassador Alipov paid tribute to Biju Patnaik’s wartime service, highlighting his participation in the Stalingrad Operation as a pilot for the Indian National Airways. “He supplied weapons to the besieged Red Army,” the envoy wrote, calling Patnaik “a towering personality and valiant pilot.”

Biju Patnaik’s courageous role was earlier acknowledged by Russia in 1995, when he was awarded the jubilee medal commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War (1941–1945).

The Russian Embassy’s tribute this year is a mark of enduring respect for international solidarity during the war. It also shines a spotlight on India’s lesser-known heroes who contributed to global peace and freedom, reinforcing Biju Patnaik’s image not just as a state leader, but as a global wartime icon.

The ceremony will honour all those who fought against fascism, and serve as a powerful reminder of the shared histories that continue to shape global alliances.
