Bihar Takes Major Step Toward Industrial Growth with IMC Gaya Project under AKIC

Patna: In a landmark development for Bihar’s industrial sector, the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC), the Government of Bihar, and the Bihar Industrial Area Development Authority (BIADA) have signed the State Support Agreement (SSA) and Shareholder Agreement (SHA) to establish an Integrated Manufacturing Cluster (IMC) in Gaya. This project is a critical node in the Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC) and is set to drive significant economic growth while preserving Gaya’s cultural heritage.

Envisioned under the government’s ‘Vikas bhi, Virasat bhi’ (development alongside heritage) motto, as recently highlighted by the Finance Minister, the IMC Gaya project aligns with the dual objectives of promoting industrialization while respecting Gaya’s status as a revered pilgrimage and heritage tourism destination.

Key Economic and Employment Impact

The IMC Gaya will cover 1,670 acres and is projected to attract an investment of INR 16,524 crore, with an initial project cost of INR 1,339 crore. It is expected to create approximately 1,09,185 jobs, offering a substantial economic uplift for the region. The cluster will cater to multiple industries, including agri-food processing, leather goods, engineering, building materials, medical equipment, and handloom products, fostering Bihar’s self-reliant industrial ecosystem.

Strategic Location and Connectivity

Situated 39 km south of Gaya International Airport, IMC Gaya benefits from robust connectivity to major transport hubs. The cluster is just 10 km from NH-19 (Golden Quadrilateral) and 2 km from NH-22, with easy access to Gaya Junction (40 km) and the upcoming New Paharpur Railway Station under the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC), 45 km away. The strategic location will further connect industries to major ports, including Haldia Port in Kolkata, and terminals of the Inland Waterways Authority of India at Gaighat, Patna, and Ramnagar, Varanasi.

Additionally, three proposed greenfield road projects will strengthen IMC Gaya’s accessibility, enhancing logistical efficiencies and making it an attractive site for domestic and international businesses.

Advanced Infrastructure for Industry

IMC Gaya will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure, including a 29.89 km internal road network, 220/33 KV and 33/11 KV electrical substations, a 162 MVA power supply, and a 19 MLD water supply system. The cluster will also house a skill development center, fire station, administrative office, parking, and commercial space, designed to support industrial operations and workforce needs.

Further, ‘Plug n Play’ facilities, such as a Common Effluent Treatment Plant, Sewage Treatment Plant, Water Treatment Plant, Solid Waste Management, and stormwater drainage, will ensure environmental sustainability. Green landscaping is also planned to enhance the area’s eco-friendliness and aesthetic appeal.

Leadership and Vision for Bihar’s Industrial Future

The SSA and SHA agreements were signed by prominent officials, including Shri Nitish Mishra, Hon’ble Minister, Department of Industries, Bihar, Smt. Bandana Preyashi, IAS, Secretary, Department of Industries, Shri Alok Ranjan Ghosh, Director, Department of Industries, Shri Kundan Kumar, Managing Director, BIADA, and Shri Rajat Kumar Saini, CEO & MD of NICDC. This collaborative effort underscores Bihar’s commitment to becoming a major industrial hub in Eastern India, in alignment with the national ‘Make in India’ vision.

As a driving force for industrial transformation, IMC Gaya is expected to catalyze economic growth, create extensive employment opportunities, and establish Bihar as a key player in India’s industrial and manufacturing landscape.
