Bhubaneswar: The historic and cultural legacy of ancient Kalinga—modern-day Odisha—will take centre stage as the capital city prepares to host the International Conference on “Kalinga and Southeast Asia: The Civilisational Connect” on May 24 and 25. The event will delve into the centuries-old maritime, cultural, and historical bonds that once linked Odisha with Southeast Asian nations.
Jointly organized by the Odia Language, Literature & Culture Department (Government of Odisha), the Institute of Media Studies, Utkal University, and the Government of India, the conference aims to foster academic dialogue and rekindle interest in Odisha’s global historical footprint.
The two-day event will bring together a diverse gathering of eminent scholars, historians, and researchers from India and across Southeast Asia. Through a series of plenary sessions, delegates will explore key themes including ancient trade routes, literary influences, cultural exchanges, and historical ties that bound Kalinga with countries such as Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
Particular emphasis will be placed on Odisha’s maritime prowess and its role as a major trade and cultural hub in the Indian Ocean region. Scholars will revisit the significance of maritime expeditions and the spread of cultural elements such as language, art, and religion from Kalinga to Southeast Asia.
Organizers view the conference as more than a historical retrospection—it is expected to serve as a vital platform for regional cooperation, cultural rediscovery, and strengthening India’s Act East policy through civilisational diplomacy.
By bringing global attention to Odisha’s ancient ties with Southeast Asia, the event underscores the state’s enduring contribution to India’s maritime heritage and highlights its strategic cultural relevance in contemporary geopolitical narratives.
