Belarusian Foreign Minister Strengthening Ties with India: A Step Towards Enhanced Bilateral Cooperation

New Delhi:  Bolstering the longstanding diplomatic relations between Belarus and India, His Excellency Mr. Sergei Aleinik, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, undertook an official visit to India from March 12 to March 13. The visit, at the invitation of External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, marked a significant step towards fortifying the ties between the two nations across various sectors.

During his stay, Minister Aleinik engaged in a series of productive meetings with key Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, and Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers and Health and Family Welfare Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya. Additionally, he had interactions with Secretary Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, Dr. Vivek Joshi, and representatives from the Indian business community.

At the heart of the discussions between Minister Aleinik and his Indian counterparts was the review of the bilateral ties between India and Belarus. Both parties explored avenues to further enhance their partnership in crucial sectors such as trade, economy, defense, education, IT, and science & technology. Emphasis was placed on deepening cooperation in areas of mutual interest and addressing regional and global challenges through collaboration in various multilateral forums including the UN and SCO.

Of particular significance was the meeting between Minister Aleinik and Minister Mandaviya, which underscored the commitment to strengthening cooperation in health, pharmaceuticals, and fertilizers. Similarly, discussions with Minister Goyal centered on enhancing economic ties, with a focus on cooperation in the manufacturing of electric vehicles, agriculture machinery, and harvesting equipment. Both sides emphasized the importance of fostering greater awareness about available business opportunities among their respective business communities.

The visit also saw the Belarusian delegation engaging with the Indian business and industry through a coordinated interaction facilitated by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). This interaction provided a platform for exploring potential avenues for collaboration and investment between the business communities of Belarus and India.

India and Belarus share a comprehensive relationship encompassing a wide range of areas. Through established mechanisms such as Foreign Office Consultations, an Intergovernmental Commission (IGC), and Joint Working Groups, both nations continue to deepen their cooperation and exchange views on bilateral, regional, and multilateral issues of mutual interest.

The visit of Minister Aleinik comes as a continuation of high-level engagements between India and Belarus, with the last visit by a Foreign Minister from Belarus occurring in November 2022. The visit underscores the commitment of both nations to furthering their partnership and exploring new avenues for collaboration across various sectors.

As the world navigates through complex geopolitical dynamics, the strengthened ties between India and Belarus stand as a testament to the enduring friendship and shared aspirations of the two nations.
