Beijing to Host 2029 World Aquatics Championships

Lausanne: The World Aquatics Championships for 2029 will find its home in Beijing, as officially confirmed by the World Aquatics Bureau, the international federation for water sports, formerly known as FINA. The decision came after a meticulous bidding process and thorough consideration.

The upcoming event is expected to draw more than 2,500 elite athletes from over 200 countries and regions, competing across six aquatic sports, namely swimming, diving, water polo, artistic swimming, open water swimming, and high diving. The Beijing-hosted World Aquatics Championships 2029 will be organized in collaboration with the China Swimming Association and the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports.

In addition to the main championships, Beijing will also be the venue for the World Aquatics Masters Championships 2029, further emphasizing China’s prominence in hosting top-tier aquatic events. Specific dates for both these gatherings will be disclosed in the coming months.

Beijing has a rich history of hosting aquatic competitions, having organized 15 editions of the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup and multiple World Cup events in swimming, diving, artistic swimming, and water polo. Notably, China hosted the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) in Hangzhou in 2018 and the World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai in 2011.

China is gearing up for a busy aquatic calendar in 2024, including hosting the World Aquatics Artistic Swimming World Cup in Beijing (April 5-7), the World Aquatics Diving World Cup – Super Final in Xi’an (April 19-21), and the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Shanghai (October 18-20).

With the ongoing World Aquatics Championships 2024 in Doha, the 2025 and 2027 editions are scheduled to take place in Singapore and Budapest, respectively, showcasing the global nature of aquatic sports.
