Barpali railway station gets ₹22-crore makeover under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme

Bhubaneswar: Barpali Railway Station in Odisha’s Bargarh district has been redeveloped into a modern, passenger-friendly transport hub under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, combining upgraded infrastructure with architectural elements inspired by the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Redeveloped at an approximate cost of ₹22 crore, the station is among the 75 railway stations across the country that are scheduled to be dedicated to the nation by the Prime Minister on July 17, 2026, under the flagship station redevelopment programme.

The revamped station features an expanded station building with a new entrance portico, a larger circulating area and improved passenger access. A 12-metre-wide Foot Over Bridge (FOB) with ramps has also been constructed to ensure barrier-free movement for passengers, including senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

Passenger amenities have been significantly upgraded with wider approach roads, additional platform shelters, resurfaced platforms, modern waiting halls, improved toilet facilities and standardised passenger information and wayfinding systems to provide a safer and more comfortable travel experience.

A key highlight of the redevelopment is the incorporation of Barpali’s renowned Ikat handloom tradition into the station’s architectural design. The façade and interiors feature motifs inspired by the region’s intricate weaving patterns, while artistic depictions of the traditional Dalkhai folk dance and other cultural elements of western Odisha have been integrated into the station, reflecting the area’s unique identity.

Railway officials said the station has been designed not only as a modern transport facility but also as a public space that celebrates the culture and heritage of the region.

The upgraded infrastructure is expected to improve connectivity and support economic activities by benefiting farmers, handloom weavers, artisans, traders and small entrepreneurs. Enhanced rail connectivity is also expected to boost agriculture, commerce, tourism and local industries across western Odisha.

Officials said the transformation of Barpali Railway Station reflects Indian Railways’ continued efforts to modernise railway infrastructure while preserving regional heritage and creating safer, smarter and more accessible railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
