Bhubaneswar: The Olive Ridley sea turtles have commenced their annual mass nesting at the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary in Kendrapara district. The news was shared by PCCF (Wildlife) Susanta Nanda, who highlighted the significance of this natural phenomenon.

It is anticipated that over the next few days, millions of Olive Ridley turtles will grace the shores of Gahirmatha to lay their eggs, continuing a timeless tradition that has fascinated conservationists and enthusiasts alike.

In a tweet posted on his personal handle, PCCF Nanda expressed his excitement, stating, “The splendid phenomenon of mass nesting of Olive Ridley sea turtles at Gahirmatha has begun. Lakhs of them will be visiting our beach to lay eggs in the next couple of days. The department is fully geared up to ensure the safety of our annual visitors.”

The commencement of mass nesting holds immense ecological significance, as it contributes to the preservation of Olive Ridley turtle populations, which face numerous threats along the Odisha coast. From habitat degradation to poaching, these gentle creatures encounter various challenges that endanger their survival.

The conservation efforts undertaken by the forest department and wildlife authorities play a crucial role in safeguarding the nesting sites and ensuring the protection of Olive Ridley turtles during their nesting season.
