New Delhi: In a heartwarming development, Shankar, the lone African elephant at the national zoo, has been freed from his chains and is now walking actively in his enclosure, thanks to the sustained efforts of Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Kirti Vardhan Singh. The Minister’s intervention marks a significant step toward improving Shankar’s physical and mental well-being.
Singh, who had visited the zoo on October 9, shared a video of Shankar’s newfound freedom on his social media platform, stating, “Following my visit to the zoo and meeting with ‘Shankar’, we collaborated with the Ministry of Environment, Team Vantara from Jamnagar, and expert veterinary doctors. I’m happy to report that Shankar is finally free from chains.”
Shankar’s rehabilitation has involved a dedicated team, including experts from South Africa and the Philippines. Neeraj, Yaduraj, Dr. Adrian, and Michael, among others, worked tirelessly to improve the elephant’s health. The team monitored Shankar’s behavior around the clock, using their expertise to calm him without the use of medication.
Kirti Vardhan Singh emphasized that the elephant’s rehabilitation is being closely observed. For the next two to three days, Shankar’s behavior will be monitored to ensure his continued progress. The zoo’s mahouts are also undergoing specialized training to ensure smooth interaction with the elephant.
Looking forward, a personalized diet plan and daily activity schedule will be developed for Shankar to keep him engaged and healthy. The Minister also conducted a video call with mahout Michael from the Philippines to check on Shankar’s well-being. As of October 11, Shankar appeared noticeably more relaxed and at ease, marking a new beginning for his life at the zoo.
