Lucknow: Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan addressed the “Regional Consultation Program on the Science of Natural Farming” today in Lucknow, advocating for a shift towards chemical-free farming to ensure a healthier future for coming generations.
Chouhan emphasized the importance of aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “saving Mother Earth from chemicals.” He encouraged farmers to adopt natural farming practices, promising subsidies for those who commit to this method for at least three years. He acknowledged that initial yields may be lower but assured that government support would offset these early challenges. Furthermore, he highlighted that natural farming produce would command 1.5 times higher prices in the market.
“The goal is to transition towards natural farming and ensure that our future generations inherit a healthier environment. To support this, we are committed to subsidizing the initial phases and providing fair market value for natural farming products,” said Chouhan.
In addition, the Union Minister announced plans to establish laboratories in agricultural universities across the country. These facilities will focus on the study and research of natural farming techniques, aiming to bolster the practice and contribute to national food reserves.
Chouhan also outlined a plan to educate one crore farmers about natural farming. A national awareness campaign will be launched in consultation with stakeholders to promote the benefits and practices of natural farming across the country.
Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat, who also spoke at the event, distinguished between natural farming and organic farming. He emphasized the benefits of natural farming, noting that it requires less water and is highly advantageous for farmers. He praised the government’s recognition of natural farming’s importance.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also addressed the gathering, detailing the state’s efforts to promote natural farming. He revealed that all six agricultural universities in Uttar Pradesh are being tasked with improving certification laboratories. Additionally, the state has established four agricultural universities, 89 Krishi Vigyan Kendras, and two central agricultural universities to further support agricultural development.
