Union Cabinet Approves ₹70,125 Crore for PMGSY-IV to Boost Rural Connectivity

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana – IV (PMGSY-IV), a rural road development initiative aimed at improving connectivity to unconnected habitations across India. The scheme, which will run from the financial year 2024-25 to 2028-29, has been allocated a total outlay of ₹70,125 crore.

Key Features of PMGSY-IV:

  1. Financial Structure: The scheme’s total budget of ₹70,125 crore includes a Central Share of ₹49,087.50 crore and a State Share of ₹21,037.50 crore. This funding will be utilized over the next five years to construct new roads and upgrade rural infrastructure.
  2. New Connectivity for 25,000 Unconnected Habitations: PMGSY-IV will focus on providing new road connectivity to 25,000 unconnected habitations with a population of 500+ in plains, 250+ in northeastern states and hilly regions, and 100+ in Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas, as per the 2011 Census. Special consideration will be given to Tribal Schedule V areas, Aspirational Districts/Blocks, Desert areas, and other underserved regions.
  3. Construction of 62,500 Kms of All-Weather Roads: The scheme will see the construction of 62,500 kilometers of all-weather roads, significantly improving access to rural areas. These roads will be built to connect the targeted habitations, ensuring year-round accessibility.
  4. Bridge Construction: In addition to road construction, the scheme also includes the construction and upgradation of bridges along the new road alignments, ensuring seamless and safe connectivity for rural populations.

The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana has been instrumental in transforming rural infrastructure since its inception, and PMGSY-IV continues this legacy by focusing on underserved and remote areas. By providing all-weather roads and essential infrastructure, the government aims to reduce rural isolation, enhance access to markets, education, healthcare, and other essential services, and boost economic opportunities for rural communities.

The scheme also emphasizes the use of sustainable technologies and local materials, which will contribute to long-term rural development while providing employment opportunities in the construction phase.
