New Delhi: In continuation of the stakeholder consultation initiative launched earlier this month, the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (DA&FW), chaired by Ruchika Gupta, Advisor (AS & DA), held the second round of discussions yesterday at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi. The focus of the meeting was on assessing the production scenario of cereals, oilseeds, cotton, and sugarcane ahead of the release of the first advance estimates for the Kharif 2024 season, slated for October 2024.
This high-level consultation brought together key stakeholders from prominent industry organizations, including CRISIL Research, Agriwatch, India Pulses and Grain Association (IPGA), Indian Oilseed and Produce Export Promotion Council (IOPEPC), Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), and ICAR-Indian Institute of Oilseed Research (IIOR). Representatives from the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), Department of Food & Public Distribution (DFPD), Crop Development Directorates, and the Department of Consumer Affairs (DOCA) were also present, actively participating in the discussions.
The primary goal of the meeting was to gather crucial insights and early assessments from experts on the current production outlook for key crops in the Kharif 2024 season. These inputs will play a pivotal role in formulating the first advance estimates for agricultural crops in the upcoming season.
During the discussions, participants shared their expertise on various issues, including crop condition assessments, production challenges, and estimation methodologies. Initial ground-level reports presented by the stakeholders indicated promising production for rice and maize. However, concerns were raised over the expected reduction in cotton acreage this season, largely attributed to ongoing crop diversification efforts.
The consultation concluded with all stakeholders underscoring the importance of continuous collaboration and information sharing between the Ministry and industry experts. This initiative is seen as a significant step toward enhancing the accuracy and reliability of crop production forecasts, ensuring better preparedness for the agricultural sector.
