Rourkela: India’s captain and goalkeeper extraordinaire, Savita Punia, showcased exceptional goalkeeping skills in a nail-biting shootout, leading her team to a 2-1 victory against the United States. The intense match, part of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24, concluded with a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation time at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela on Sunday.
Savita’s stellar performance during the shootout, marked by four remarkable saves, secured a bonus point for India. The shootout saw Mumtaz Khan and Sonika converting their shots, ensuring India’s triumph after the regulation time ended in a 1-1 draw. Deepika (19′) netted a goal for India, while Ashley Sessa (45′) scored for the USA during the regular play.
In a high-paced and attacking display of hockey, India, fueled by a passionate home crowd, dominated ball possession early on. Despite an energetic start by the USA, India’s assertive offense led to their first penalty corner, resulting in Deepika’s precise shot that secured the lead in the second quarter.
