Bengaluru: Royal Challengers Bangaluru (RCB) clinched the fourth and final playoff spot in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) by defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 27 runs on Saturday. This victory marks RCB’s sixth consecutive win, propelling them into the last-four stage of the tournament.
RCB’s win was set up by a solid opening partnership between skipper Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli. The duo shared a 78-run stand in just 9.4 overs, laying a strong foundation for their team’s innings. Du Plessis scored a well-crafted 54, while Kohli contributed 47 runs. The match saw a brief interruption due to rain at the end of the third over but resumed without major delays.
Rajat Patidar, batting at No.3, played a crucial role with his quickfire 41 off 23 balls. He forged a 71-run partnership with Cameron Green, who remained unbeaten with an impressive 38 off just 17 deliveries, helping RCB post a competitive total.
In response, CSK’s legendary captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni provided a glimmer of hope with a brisk 25 off 13 balls, likely marking his final IPL appearance. Despite his efforts, CSK fell short. Yash Dayal’s composed bowling in the final over, where he took 2 wickets for 42 runs, sealed the victory for RCB.
Playoff Lineup
With this win, RCB joins Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the playoffs. The victory over CSK, a team known for its strong performances, underscores RCB’s momentum and form heading into the crucial knockout stages.
