New Delhi: On the eve of the 75th Republic Day, President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, addressed the nation with a heartfelt speech, expressing pride and gratitude for the nation’s journey and accomplishments despite challenges. The President marked the occasion as a historic milestone and a festive celebration of the country’s uniqueness and diverse culture during the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, which commemorated 75 years of Independence.
Reflecting on the Republic Day, President Murmu emphasized the significance of the Constitution and its theme of democracy, inherent in the words “We, the People of India.” She underscored India’s historical role as the “mother of democracy,” with a democratic system older than its Western counterparts.
Recalling the monumental task of framing principles and processes for the newly independent India, President Murmu acknowledged the leaders and officials who contributed to the creation of the Constitution. The document, a product of nearly three years of discussions in the Constituent Assembly, stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to democratic governance.
President Murmu called attention to the ongoing Amrit Kaal, the period leading to the centenary of Independence, highlighting the transformative phase India is undergoing. She urged citizens to uphold their Fundamental Duties, emphasizing Mahatma Gandhi’s words that a focus on duties is essential for national progress.
Republic Day, for President Murmu, is an occasion to recall foundational values, principles, and the spirit of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar that guides the country on the path of social justice. She paid tribute to Shri Karpoori Thakur Ji, a champion of social justice, on the conclusion of his birth centenary celebration.
The President expressed joy over India’s successful hosting of the Group of 20 Summit, lauding the people’s involvement in G20 events, which made citizens participants in diplomatic matters. She highlighted the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill, calling it a historic step toward gender equality.
India’s achievements in space exploration, including the lunar mission and upcoming projects, were acknowledged. President Murmu praised the enthusiasm of citizens for ISRO’s initiatives, emphasizing their role in inspiring the younger generation, especially women, to pursue careers in science and technology.
Economic confidence, welfare schemes, and social inclusivity were central themes in the President’s address. The government’s efforts to expand welfare initiatives, provide free food grains, and focus on ease of living were commended. India’s sporting achievements, with a record-breaking medal tally in the Asian Games, were also celebrated.
Addressing global conflicts, President Murmu advocated for resolving disputes through reason and non-violence. She quoted Lord Buddha, emphasizing the eternal law that enmities are appeased through non-enmity.
On environmental issues, the President commended India’s leadership in promoting renewable energy and the ‘LiFE Movement’ for adopting an environment-conscious lifestyle. The period of Amrit Kaal was described as a time of unprecedented technological changes, with President Murmu emphasizing the need for removing hurdles and providing equal opportunities for the youth.
In her closing remarks, President Murmu extended greetings to teachers, farmers, laborers, Armed Forces, Police, and Para-military Forces, urging all citizens to dedicate themselves to the service of the nation.
