New Delhi: President of India, Droupadi Murmu, today presented the Fifth National Water Awards at a ceremony in New Delhi, highlighting the critical importance of water conservation in ensuring a clean and prosperous society. Addressing the gathering, the President emphasized that water is a fundamental human right and plays a vital role in health, food security, and the livelihoods of the underprivileged.
In her speech, President Murmu expressed concern over the limited availability of freshwater resources, which are being depleted and polluted due to human activities. She urged the nation to prioritize water conservation and management, noting that despite its importance, the conservation of water remains largely neglected.
She praised the Government of India for its initiatives in promoting water conservation and water harvesting, underscoring the importance of sustainable water management for future generations. The President also highlighted the wisdom of India’s ancestors in building ponds and reservoirs near villages and temples, which served as critical water sources in times of drought. She lamented that these traditional practices are being forgotten, with some reservoirs being encroached upon for personal gain, leading to water shortages and flood-like situations during heavy rainfall.
President Murmu called for collective responsibility in ensuring a Water-Secure India, stressing that every individual can contribute through small but impactful efforts. She encouraged practices like turning off taps, preventing water overflow from tanks, and implementing water harvesting systems at homes. She also urged communities to renovate traditional water reservoirs to preserve water resources.
The National Water Awards, presented in nine categories, aim to raise awareness about the importance of water conservation and motivate people to adopt best practices for water usage. The categories include Best State, Best District, Best Village Panchayat, Best Urban Local Body, Best School or College, Best Industry, Best Water User Association, Best Institution, and Best Civil Society. The President expressed confidence that the “Best Practices” of the awardees would inspire others across the country to take similar actions.
