President Droupadi Murmu Inaugurates KLE Cancer Hospital in Belagavi, Calls for Collective Action Against Cancer

Belagavi: The President of India,Droupadi Murmu, inaugurated the state-of-the-art KLE Cancer Hospital in Belagavi today, emphasizing the urgent need to tackle cancer through awareness, equitable healthcare, and a collective societal approach.

Addressing the gathering, the President highlighted the growing global burden of cancer.

“In 2022, there were an estimated 20 million new cancer cases and 9.7 million deaths worldwide. In India, the incidence of cancer stands at approximately 100 patients per one lakh people, and studies indicate this could increase by 13 percent by 2025 compared to 2020,” she stated.

The President called for a multi-pronged approach, involving early diagnosis, timely treatment, and a strong emphasis on psychological support for patients.

President Murmu underlined the role of healthcare professionals in providing holistic care.

“Every word of sympathy and compassion from a doctor has the power to transform a patient’s life for the better. Comprehensive care must address both the physical and psychological needs of cancer patients,” she said.

The President stressed the importance of spreading awareness about cancer’s causes, diagnosis, and treatment.

“Ignorance and financial constraints often delay diagnosis and treatment, which can prove fatal in cancer cases. We must create a patient-centric, equitable, and world-class healthcare system that leaves no one behind,” she urged.

She also addressed societal disparities in healthcare, particularly the neglect of women’s health.

“In some families, the health of boys is prioritized over girls, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment for women. This can be critical, especially in cancer cases. Families and society must take women’s health more seriously and ensure timely medical intervention,” she added.

The President called for a united effort to combat cancer, involving healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the community at large. She urged households to encourage open discussions about health issues, particularly among women, to ensure early detection and treatment.

The inauguration of the KLE Cancer Hospital marks a significant step forward in enhancing cancer care infrastructure in Karnataka. The hospital is equipped with advanced facilities to provide cutting-edge treatment and comprehensive care for cancer patients, reinforcing India’s commitment to improving health outcomes.
