Surat: The 20th convocation of Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) in Surat witnessed the esteemed presence and address of the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu. The event, held today, highlighted the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) and its role in shaping the future of India.
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu emphasized the growing significance of AI in the country. She highlighted the efforts of the Government of India and state governments in implementing various programs to harness the benefits of AI for national development. Big tech companies, recognizing India’s potential in the field, are initiating new projects to utilize the country’s AI capabilities.
President Murmu urged technology institutes like SVNIT to forge close collaborations with the corporate sector, NGOs, and research institutions to address the ‘AI skill gap’ in the country. Emphasizing the pivotal role of youth, she stated that the younger generation would play a crucial part in positioning India at the forefront of rapidly evolving technologies such as AI and machine learning.
Encouraging students to utilize science as a guide for their technical skills and innovative thinking, President Murmu called for a focus on problem-solving skills for nation-building. She urged students not only to meet international engineering standards but also to set new benchmarks in innovation, efficiency, and inclusivity. The President encouraged them to not only consider job and career paths but also leverage their knowledge, alumni networks, and technical skills to create new businesses and employment opportunities.
President Murmu advised students to establish ideals for their future lives and professions, ensuring they never face difficulty in choosing the right path. Stressing the importance of staying connected to their roots, she suggested that this connection would propel them forward and contribute to a meaningful life.
Expressing her delight at the increasing number of female students in engineering colleges and institutes, the President commended girls for pursuing careers in science and technology. She urged all National Institutes of Technology (NITs) to organize programs, campaigns, or workshops to encourage more girls to study in engineering and technology institutes, promoting inclusivity and diversity in the field.
