Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Padma Shri awardee Kamala Pujari, who passed away at the age of 73. Pujari, renowned for her monumental contributions to agriculture, particularly in promoting organic farming and preserving indigenous seeds, passed away in the early hours of Saturday due to cardiac arrest.
In a heartfelt post on X, the Prime Minister paid tribute to Pujari’s legacy, highlighting her pivotal role in enriching sustainability and protecting biodiversity. He acknowledged her significant impact on boosting organic agricultural practices and safeguarding traditional paddy seeds.
“Pained by the passing away of Kamala Pujari Ji. She made a monumental contribution to agriculture, particularly boosting organic agricultural practices and protecting indigenous seeds. Her work in enriching sustainability and protecting biodiversity will be remembered for years. She was also a beacon in empowering the tribal communities. Condolences to her family and admirers. Om Shanti,” the Prime Minister stated in his message.
Kamala Pujari, hailing from Koraput, was not only a stalwart in agriculture but also a staunch advocate for tribal welfare. Her efforts in traditional farming earned her several accolades, including the prestigious Padma Shri in 2019, awarded by President Ram Nath Kovind. She was also the recipient of the Equator Initiative Award in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2002.
Pujari’s dedication to preserving hundreds of indigenous paddy varieties and her relentless efforts to promote organic farming had a lasting impact on the agricultural community. Her work involved mobilizing people, organizing group gatherings, and encouraging farmers to abandon chemical fertilizers in favor of organic methods.
