Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s wildlife population includes 2,098 elephants and 27 tigers, according to the 2023-24 wildlife census, as revealed by Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia in the State Assembly on Tuesday.
Responding to a query from BJD MLA Sarada Prasanna Jena, representing Balikuda-Erasama, Minister Singhkhuntia provided detailed figures on various wildlife species in the state. He reported that Bhitarkanika is home to 1,850 saltwater crocodiles, while Satkosia, Similipal, and the Ghodahada Dam harbor 97, 76, and 84 muggers (marsh crocodiles) respectively. Additionally, the Mahanadi River is currently home to 14 gharials.
Highlighting the aquatic life in the region, the Minister stated that 743 dolphins have been recorded in Chilika Lake and the surrounding marine areas, emphasizing the richness of Odisha’s wildlife diversity.
