Odisha Govt Increases Midday Meal Prices for School Students

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has announced a revision in the prices of midday meals provided to school students under the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Yojana. The increase, effective from December 1, reflects the rising costs of vegetables and essential commodities.

As per the revised rates, students in classes 1 to 5 will now receive meals at ₹7.64, up from the previous ₹5.90. Similarly, for students in classes 6 to 8, the cost has been increased to ₹10.94 from ₹8.82.

The School and Mass Education Department has directed all district collectors to ensure the implementation of the new rates starting next month. This adjustment aligns with the government’s commitment to maintaining the nutritional quality of meals provided to schoolchildren amidst inflationary pressures.

The decision to revise the meal prices follows an earlier announcement by School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond in August, where he had indicated that the cost per meal would see an increment of ₹1.

The Pradhan Mantri Poshan Yojana, a central government initiative, plays a crucial role in promoting education and health among school-going children by ensuring access to nutritious meals. The revised rates aim to continue this mission effectively despite the challenges posed by rising food prices.
