Odisha FC Women’s Historic Triumph: Clinch Indian Women’s League Title in Style, Eye AFC Women’s Champions League

Bhubaneswar: In a remarkable display of talent and determination, Odisha FC Women achieved a historic milestone by clinching the Indian Women’s League (IWL) title for the 2023-24 season. Their victory came in a resounding 6-0 win over Kickstart FC in the final match held at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar, on March 24, 2024. With this triumph, they dethroned defending champions Gokulam FC, establishing themselves as the new leaders of Indian women’s football.

The journey to this momentous achievement began twenty months ago when Odisha FC Women was formed with a clear dream in mind. Despite the challenges, they pursued their goal with unwavering conviction, and the results are now evident for all to see.

The team’s dominance throughout the league was reflected in their performance, finishing at the top of the table with 31 points from 12 matches. This placed them two points ahead of their closest competitors, Gokulam Kerala FC. Importantly, this victory also earned them the opportunity to represent India at the inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League.

A standout feature of Odisha FC’s campaign was their exceptional consistency in both attack and defense. They scored an impressive 31 goals while conceding only four throughout the season. Notably, India International Pyari Xaxa emerged as the top scorer for the team, netting eight goals, closely followed by Win Theingi Tun from Myanmar with seven goals. Captain Indumathi Kathiresan played a pivotal role in the team’s success, providing crucial support in midfield.

In addition to their attacking prowess, Odisha FC showcased their defensive strength, thanks in large part to goalkeeper Shreya Hooda. The National Team member conceded only four goals throughout the season and secured an impressive nine clean sheets in 12 matches. Hooda’s outstanding performance earned her recognition as a top contender for the Golden Glove award.

Speaking about her achievement, Shreya Hooda expressed her gratitude to her coaches, teammates, and Odisha FC for believing in her. She emphasized the importance of consistent performance in club football, which ultimately impacts her performance in the National Team.

While the players rightfully received acclaim for their success, credit must also be given to head coach Crispin Chettri, whose strategic planning and leadership played a crucial role. Chettri’s vision and guidance proved instrumental in shaping the team’s journey to victory.
