Bhubaneswar: In a much-anticipated clash, Odisha FC is gearing up to defend its position at the summit of the league table against FC Goa, the second-placed team with 27 points from 11 games. The stage is set for an electrifying showdown, with fans expected to throng the stadium to witness the high-stakes encounter.
Odisha FC arrives at this pivotal moment riding the wave of recent successes, having triumphed in the Kalinga Super Cup, held in their home state. Emerging as champions in the competition, they then carried their winning momentum into the league, securing consecutive victories against Kerala Blasters and Hyderabad FC.
The remarkable achievements of Odisha FC align with the broader growth of football in the region, propelled by the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Odisha has rapidly evolved into the football hub of India, hosting prestigious international competitions such as the Intercontinental Cup and the India vs Qatar FIFA AFC Qualifier. The state boasts top-notch football infrastructure, including Kalinga Stadium Arena, Capital Football Arena, and Odisha Football Academy.
Recently, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the AIFF-FIFA Football Talent Academy in Bhubaneswar, in the esteemed presence of FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, Mr. Arsene Wenger. This academy aims to nurture the most promising young football talents nationwide, with special slots reserved for players from Odisha.
Featuring six FIFA-certified pitches, including five natural grass fields and one synthetic turf, the academy is equipped with cutting-edge facilities such as LED floodlights and players’ changing rooms. It stands as a testament to Odisha’s commitment to providing aspiring footballers, irrespective of gender, with a conducive environment for training.
In a bid to promote grassroots football, the state has commissioned FIFA Certified E License Coaching Camps, ensuring aspiring footballers receive proper guidance in their training. Bhubaneswar serves as the base for the national U16 and U19 women’s teams, further strengthening its role in nurturing talent.
Beyond coaching, competition, and infrastructure, Odisha has fostered a vibrant football community and culture. The Juggernauts, one of the most active fan communities in the country, have made history by forming an international alliance with the supporters’ group of Watford FC in 2021.
Odisha FC, backed by the robust football ecosystem in the state, continues to excel not only in the men’s league but also in the ongoing season of the Indian Women’s League (IWL) 2023-24. With five victories in six matches, Odisha FC in the IWL stands as another testament to the state’s commitment to women’s football. Sports Odisha, a state-owned and sponsored team, also competes in the top tier tournament for women. The recently concluded National Games in Goa witnessed Odisha clinching the gold in women’s football, showcasing the remarkable strides made in the sport.
