Odisha Approves Additional Subsidy for Rooftop Solar Projects Under PMSG: MBY

Bhubaneswar: In a landmark decision to boost renewable energy adoption, the Odisha Cabinet on Friday approved an additional subsidy under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Mufti Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY) to promote rooftop solar projects in residential areas.

The initiative is aimed at encouraging households and housing societies to switch to solar power, reducing dependency on conventional energy sources, and supporting the state’s journey toward carbon neutrality.

Subsidy Details

  • Individual Households: The state will offer an additional subsidy of ₹25,000 per kilowatt for rooftop solar installations up to 2 kilowatts per household. For the third kilowatt, a subsidy of ₹10,000 will be provided.
  • Group Housing Societies (GHS) and Residential Welfare Associations (RWAs): Financial assistance of ₹18,000 per kilowatt will be available for projects up to 500 kilowatts (capped at 3 kilowatts per household) for purposes such as EV charging and general electricity usage.

The program will be implemented over three years, from 2024-25 to 2026-27, with a total allocation of ₹1,800 crore. It is expected to benefit approximately 3 lakh domestic electricity consumers across Odisha, accelerating the adoption of solar energy and contributing to a more sustainable future.

“This initiative aligns with the state’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainability,” a senior government official said. “By providing significant financial incentives, we aim to make rooftop solar installations more accessible and affordable for households and residential communities.”

The subsidy is expected to:

  • Reduce the burden on conventional electricity grids.
  • Lower electricity costs for households and housing societies.
  • Support the adoption of electric vehicles through enhanced charging infrastructure.
  • Contribute significantly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the state.
