New Delhi: NTPC Limited, India’s leading integrated power company, is set to unveil the latest edition of its flagship Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, the Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM). This program, aligned with the Government of India’s Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao initiative, aims to combat gender inequality by nurturing the potential of young girls and providing them with opportunities for growth and exploration.
Scheduled to commence in April 2024, the new iteration of GEM will welcome nearly 3,000 deserving children from underprivileged backgrounds across 42 identified locations of the power sector PSU. This expansion will bring the total number of beneficiaries under the Mission to over 10,000.
Originating as a pilot project in 2018 with just three locations and 392 participants, the GEM Mission has evolved into a nationwide movement over the years. Despite facing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the program has persevered and grown, reaching new heights of impact and outreach. To date, it has empowered a total of 7,424 girls, with participation numbers steadily rising each year. In 2023 alone, 2,707 girls took part in the workshop across 40 locations of NTPC, spanning 16 states of India.
At its core, the GEM Mission focuses on fostering the leadership potential of girls, preparing them for the future. The workshop covers a wide range of topics including health, hygiene, safety, fitness, sports, and yoga, providing a holistic approach to skill development and confidence-building.
The GEM Workshop has earned praise for its comprehensive approach to empowering girls, offering mentorship and support to help them thrive. By equipping girls with essential skills and resources, NTPC aims to create a pathway to a brighter future for generations to come. The program seeks to empower girls to become agents of change, not only transforming their own lives but also influencing their families, communities, and the nation as a whole.
