New Delhi: In a pioneering initiative, NTPC Ltd. has partnered with the Indian Army to set up a Solar Hydrogen-based Microgrid at Chushul, Ladakh, designed to provide a stable power supply using green hydrogen in remote off-grid Army locations. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for this unique project through video conferencing today, joined by the Chief of Defence Staff, NTPC’s CMD, and senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and the Indian Army.
This microgrid system, engineered by NTPC, will operate independently, generating 200kW of power using hydrogen as an energy storage medium to provide round-the-clock energy throughout the year. Strategically located at an altitude of 4,400 meters where temperatures plummet to -30°C, this project aims to support Indian soldiers with a sustainable power solution, replacing existing diesel generators and enabling energy resilience in one of the world’s toughest terrains.
Key features of the Solar Hydrogen-based microgrid include the integration of renewable energy sources, robust power supply under extreme conditions, a significant reduction in carbon emissions, and scalability for diverse applications. Combining battery reliability with hydrogen’s extended energy storage capacity, the system ensures a steady supply of green energy, promoting self-sufficiency for off-grid operations, especially during road connectivity disruptions.
Leveraging Ladakh’s high solar irradiance and low temperatures, the project will enhance the production and utilization of green energy, reducing the Army’s dependence on conventional fuel logistics and marking a substantial shift toward decarbonization of defence operations in the Himalayas.
Complementing this initiative, NTPC has recently begun a trial run of a hydrogen bus in Leh as part of its commitment to renewable energy and carbon neutrality in Ladakh. Additionally, NTPC is setting up a hydrogen fuelling station and solar plant, with five fuel cell buses planned for intracity routes in Leh, advancing its commitment to sustainable transportation in the region.
With a target of reaching 60GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032, NTPC is at the forefront of India’s green hydrogen technology and energy storage sector, supporting various initiatives, including hydrogen blending, carbon capture, electric buses, and smart townships as it drives towards a decarbonized future.
