Muscat: The first-ever Men’s FIH Hockey5s World Cup concluded in a thrilling fashion as the Netherlands emerged victorious, defeating Malaysia in the final and securing the coveted trophy. This achievement mirrored the success of the Dutch women’s team, who claimed the title just four days earlier.
Malaysia displayed commendable performance throughout the tournament and earned a well-deserved silver medal. The team, with six players from the squad that won gold at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in the Hockey5s format, showcased their growth from junior to senior level.
In the bronze medal match, hosts Oman celebrated a historic victory against Poland, marking their first-ever FIH World Cup medal in any format. The home team’s exhilarating 3-2 win was a testament to their determination and the enthusiastic support of the local fans.
Pakistan secured the Challenger Trophy, dominating Switzerland in a convincing victory, demonstrating their resilience and skill despite not making it to the quarter-finals.
The tournament, hosted in Muscat, Oman, witnessed an action-packed four days, featuring a total of 507 goals. The final between the Netherlands and Malaysia was particularly intense, with the Dutch securing a 5-2 victory. Despite Malaysia’s early equalizer and strong efforts in the second half, the Dutch team controlled the game, ultimately clinching the title with two late goals.
Joey van Walstijn, named the best goalkeeper of the tournament, emphasized the strength of the Dutch team’s collective effort, stating, “The prize is also for Koene Schaper, we did it together, and the whole team performed, and that’s what it’s all about.”
